Energy Diet

‘No Thanks’ to Gardening

There are at least three checkboxes on the energy diet that we won’t be checking, and they all have to do with gardening.

We're not big gardeners, but we will help the grandparents prune their fruit trees.

First of all, we do not like gardening, none of us in the family. Secondly, we don’t need to do it, because as I already mentioned in our previous posts, we get fruits and vegetables from my husband’s parents. And thirdly, even if we didn’t get it from them, we have in the vicinity (within walking distance) couple of farms, where farmers sell their products to nearby residents and they have very good prices, too.

I would like to highlight a little why I don’t like gardening. When I was young I lived in the city. In fact, I was born in our capital Ljubljana and so was my husband. We both lived our childhoods between skyscrapers and paved surfaces. When we were teenagers our families moved (not together, because at that time we didn’t know each other :-)) to the suburbs of Ljubljana in the newly built private houses, which was very usual at that time. A lot of families moved out from the city center. So in our youth, we both got gardens, and you can imagine that most of city-born teenagers are not very fond of gardening :-). From that time on we both share the same dislike for it and we are glad that we managed to solve the problem differently.

Pressing apples from the orchard for vinegar

In the spring and in the autumn we help my husband’s parents on their garden and orchard as much as it is possible and we work together quite well. Especially in autumn, we prune fruit trees and we pick grapes, apples and plums. From apples, we press apple juice and apple vinegar. Also from grapes we press juice, but one part of it we have for vine and vine vinegar. My mother-in-law cooks plum marmalade which is much, much better than what’s purchased in the store.

Maybe one day we’ll have to be involved with gardening. Until then, fortunately we do not need to bother ourselves with this subject. But if we ever have to live on a farm, we’d prefer being cattlemen rather than farmers. Furthermore, we love animals, especially horses.

P.S. And we won’t check the box “used biodegradable bags for walking the dog” – simply because we do not have a dog. 🙂
